ESL SONGS: PSY – Gangnam Style – Intermediate

Love it or hate it, PSY’s ‘Gangnam Style’ song has had over 1 billion page views on YouTube. “But he’s singing in Korean,” I hear you cry, “how can I integrate that into my English lesson?” Well keep reading. Below is a lesson plan you can do with students of intermediate level and above. There are some warmer questions, task questions for two different clips, and some after clip discussion questions.

Before the video

1) Who is PSY?
2) Where is he from?
3) How many people do you think have watched his video on YouTube?
4) What does ‘Gangnam Style’ mean?
5) What does ‘Oppa’ mean?
6) Who can do his dance?






Now watch the video and answer these questions.
1) Who is the best dancer (you can’t say PSY)? Why?
2) Which clip is the funniest? Why?
3) What do you think the song is about?


Now you’re going to see the lyrics to the song, but in English.
Write down five words that you think will be in the song. You can’t say ‘sexy’ or ‘lady’.
After the video:
What is the song about?
What do you think of the lyrics?
Why do you think so many people have watched the video?
